A Rainy Day Activity In Cornwall – Via Ferrata

Let's face it, when you take a holiday in the UK, you may experience a downpour or showers. 1 adult with 2 pre-teen boys decide to have a go of Via Ferrata near Penryn on a wet day to show that it's a great way to be outdoors despite the dampness! Read about our adventure below..,

Harness clipped, heart thumping, the dizzying heights of Via Ferrata near Penryn beckoned. If you’re seeking an unforgettable adrenaline-fueled adventure for thrill-seekers aged 8 and up during your St Ives holidays, look no further. This high-wire and zip-line experience, carved into the dramatic landscape of a former quarry, is an absolute must-do.

Getting there

If you have booked a holiday cottage in St Ives, reaching Via Ferrata requires a car, but the journey from the main road to Falmouth is straightforward, thanks to clear signage.

Once you turn off, be prepared for charming, winding country lanes. Keep a keen eye out for the distinctive orange Via Ferrata signs – your trusty guides to the adventure.

A word of caution: while Sat Nav can be helpful, be aware that it occasionally leads to nearby (but incorrect!) locations, so trust the physical signposts. Upon arrival, ample parking awaits in well-marked gravel areas.

The welcoming reception is housed in a small wooden hut situated in the main car park, conveniently adjacent to a small toilet block. We were booked in at 9.30am and arrived with 20 minutes to spare which worked well for getting organised before we started.

Via Ferrata Experience

Safety first

We were warmly greeted by our instructor, Katie, who showed us into a spacious barn filled with the reassuring sight of climbing harnesses and essential equipment. With patient guidance, she expertly kitted us out, clearly explaining the purpose of each piece, before we took our first steps towards the adventure. From the outset, safety was paramount; Katie’s clear and concise instructions immediately put us at ease and held the boys’ attention effortlessly.

The fundamentals

The experience was thoughtfully structured, gradually increasing in challenge. We began by mastering the fundamental techniques of attaching ourselves to the sturdy iron cables and navigating along them, before venturing onto more demanding sections of the course.

Our initial exploration unfolded within the impressive expanse of a former quarry, now a vibrant haven for nature. Its raw, unspoilt beauty provided a stunning and dramatic backdrop for our introduction to Via Ferrata.

Progression

Throughout this first hour, Katie maintained a vigilant watch over us, regularly checking our harnesses and equipment to ensure our safety. Progression onto the main route was contingent on demonstrating a mastery of essential skills. This involved clearly understanding the safety signage, confidently hanging from our lanyards, possessing the strength to haul ourselves back onto the cable if needed, and demonstrating the crucial technique of leaning back trustingly from the rock face. A reasonable level of fitness, good mobility and strength, and a healthy respect (rather than fear) of heights are definitely prerequisites for successfully completing these initial challenges.

The Iron Bridge

We navigated our way using the natural environment and metal rungs that have been placed around the course. Then came the iron bridge – a single cable stretched across the quarry like a tightrope walker’s nightmare, with only a cable on each side to steady yourself. Each step sent a ripple of movement through the wire, a thrilling yet unnerving sway that truly tested your nerve. I am sure the view from up there is a breathtaking vista; my world narrowed to the cold, textured metal under my boots, each step a small victory against the drop below. The sheer elation radiating from the boys as they reached the other side was infectious, a tangible reward for conquering this wobbly challenge. Crossing that bridge wasn’t just an activity; it felt like a genuine triumph.

This is the end of the activity if you are doing the taster 1.5 hr session for £25pp. However, if like us you booked the 3hr session for £50pp, you come off the iron bridge and back onto the safety of land for a short breather.

Canoe Quarry

With lungs full of fresh air and a quick drink at the fountain, Katie then guided us on a pleasant walk through the quarry grounds towards a second, even larger expanse – Canoe Quarry – where the still waters hinted at a perfect venue for canoeing and paddle boarding adventures. As we strolled, she shared the inspiring story of how Via Ferrata contributes to the vital charity work BF Adventure does with vulnerable young people. She also pointed out intriguing future projects, like the promise of an underground tunnel maze, which immediately ignited the boys’ enthusiasm for a return visit. Arriving at Canoe Quarry, we discovered three distinct stages of the Via Ferrata, each progressively ascending in height and technical complexity.

Increasing technical difficulty

With reassuring thoroughness, Katie re-checked our equipment, instilling us all with the confidence to tackle the challenges ahead, and we eagerly set off. The increase in difficulty was palpable, requiring focused effort from each of us to navigate the routes. It was heartening to witness the boys’ camaraderie as they offered encouragement and assistance to each other, and even to me, their teamwork shining through. Reaching the summit was met with broad smiles of accomplishment.

Zip, zip away!

From there, Katie led us to a nearby shed, the launch point for the exhilarating zip line that soared across the quarry. After a clear briefing on the equipment and safety procedures, we took turns zipping through the air, the boys erupting with laughter and relishing every moment of their multiple goes. At the end of the session Katie took us on a lovely nature walk back to the big barn to take off all the equipment and end our session. All three of us were buzzing with adrenaline and a real sense of achievement.

Rewarding cafe treats

Post-adventure, the tempting aroma of the café, just a short stroll from reception, drew us towards a charming rustic wooden barn. Perched overlooking the iconic iron bridge and the first quarry, it offered a delightful setting to refuel.

We found the service a little confusing – a mix of queuing and table service – but were soon settled.

The boys’ simple request for cans and chips was swiftly met, and the reasonably priced menu suggested a popular spot, evidenced by the numerous tables reserved for lunch, a testament to its appeal among both locals and visitors.

This location offers the potential for a truly action-packed day.
