Bark and Ride: Dog (and child) Friendly Stops on the Way to Cornwall
That said, the journey can feel long. Cornwall may not be quite the end of the earth, but when you are halfway down the motorway with restless children and a dog that needs a run, it can feel like it. The good news is that there are plenty of excellent places to stop along the way. Whether you need lunch, a leg stretch, a scenic walk or a quick charge for your electric vehicle, you can turn the journey into part of the holiday.
Here are some of the best dog (and child!) friendly stops to break up your drive into the South West.
Darts Farm, near Exeter
Just five minutes from Junction 30 of the M5, Darts Farm is a brilliant first stop as you head into Devon. It is far more than a farm shop, with a lively atmosphere and plenty to keep everyone entertained.
For families, there is an outdoor play area complete with a mini fort and rope course. Dogs are welcome on the farm walk and surrounding fields, so you can enjoy a proper stretch before getting back on the road.
When it comes to food, there are several options. Well behaved dogs are allowed in selected seating areas, including the bar spaces and outdoor terraces, making it easy to grab a relaxed lunch without leaving anyone behind. If you are travelling in an electric vehicle, you will also find Tesla superchargers on site, many of which are compatible with other EVs.

Strawberry Fields Farm Shop, Lifton
Right on the Devon and Cornwall border just off the A30, Strawberry Fields is perfectly placed to mark your official arrival in Cornwall. It is a popular stop for good reason.
Children will love the tractor themed outdoor play area, and there are vintage vehicles dotted around which make for great photo opportunities. It is a fun place to stretch your legs before the final leg of the journey.
Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating areas as long as they are on a lead, so you can enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat together. There is also a newer branch at Buckfastleigh, which is particularly handy if you are travelling via the A38, with one of the South West’s largest electric car charging stations just alongside.

Jamaica Inn, near Launceston
Few stops feel quite as atmospheric as Jamaica Inn. Located just off the A30 at Bolventor, this historic coaching inn dates back to 1776 and is famously depicted in Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name.
It is a great place to pause if you enjoy a bit of history with your break. Inside, you will find a traditional inn setting, while outside there is plenty of space for children to explore, including a large pirate ship play area.
Dogs are welcome, and there are EV charging points available, making it a convenient as well as characterful stop.

Woods Café, Cardinham Woods
Tucked away in the beautiful Cardinham Woods near Bodmin, Woods Café is a favourite for those who prefer a quieter, more nature focused stop. Despite feeling wonderfully remote, it is only around ten minutes from the A30.
The surrounding woodland offers miles of trails for walking and cycling, perfect for both dogs and children who need a proper run around. There is also a play park and even a dog wash station, which can be a lifesaver after a muddy walk.
The café itself serves up hearty food and good coffee, making it an ideal place to recharge before continuing your journey. As the woods are surrounded by farmland and livestock, it is important to keep dogs close and under control at all times.

Golitha Falls, near Liskeard
If you are travelling via Plymouth and the A38, Golitha Falls is well worth a short detour. This beautiful stretch of ancient woodland follows the River Fowey through a series of cascades and waterfalls, creating a peaceful and scenic setting.
It is a fantastic spot for a dog friendly walk, with plenty of space to explore. Children will enjoy the stepping stones and the sense of adventure that comes with wandering through the woods. As with many natural areas, it is sensible to keep dogs on a lead where wildlife may be present.
You’ll also find Inkie’s Smokehouse there offering generous portions of smoked meats and homemade sauces in a relaxed, rustic setting. There is also an ice cream shack for a sweet treat before you head back on the road. With free parking and toilet facilities available, it’s the perfect place to pause.
