Do you really need a car for a St Ives holiday?

St Ives is one of those rare Cornish towns where you can genuinely choose whether to bring the car or leave it at home. Many guests love the convenience of having parking right outside, especially if they’re travelling with dogs, beach gear or luggage. It can take the stress out of arrival day and makes exploring the wider area simple. Places like Zennor, Gwithian and Porthkidney are breathtaking but not always walkable, so having your own wheels can open up more of West Cornwall. But St Ives is also incredibly compact, which is why cottage holidays in St Ives work so well for guests who prefer to explore on foot. Most beaches, cafés, galleries and shops sit within a short 5 to 10‑minute walk of each other, linked by pretty lanes and characterful cobbled streets.

Where should I stay if I don’t want to drive?

If you’d rather skip the driving altogether, choosing the right location makes all the difference. Walking from Porthmeor Beach to Porthminster Beach via The Digey is a perfect example of how compact the town is. It’s only around 0.4 miles, usually under 10 minutes, and takes you through one of St Ives’ most charming pedestrian routes.

For couples wanting a romantic retreat in the heart of town, staying at 15 The Digey is ideal. This luxury dog friendly holiday apartment for two sits on one of St Ives’ oldest cobbled streets, just minutes from Porthmeor Beach, St Ives Harbour and Tate St Ives. With restaurants, cafés, independent shops and galleries all within easy walking distance, it’s perfect for a car‑free break.

Plane Sailing, tucked away on historic Virgin Street, is another brilliant choice. Virgin Street is pedestrianised, so you’re staying in one of the town’s most characterful traffic‑free pockets. Porthmeor Beach, Fore Street, the harbourfront and the town’s galleries are all just a few minutes away, making it a great option for couples or small families who want to explore central St Ives on foot.

Coastal Seascape is another great option for a car-free holiday in St Ives. Its central location puts the beaches and coastline of St Ives within minutes of the front door. There’s a shared rear courtyard where beach equipment or bikes can be kept, and Porthmeor Beach is particularly close for morning swims, surfing or sunset watching.

If you prefer a slightly elevated position with easy access to transport, Porthia Penthouse sits just above the train station and near the new Malakoff bus station. St Ives Harbour, shops and restaurants are still close by, and Porthminster Beach is an easy stroll downhill.

Can I get to St Ives by train?

Arriving by train is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a car‑free holiday in St Ives. Direct trains from London Paddington to St Erth run roughly every two hours throughout the day, making it a simple long‑distance route into West Cornwall. From St Erth, you simply change onto the St Ives branch line, a short and famously scenic 10‑minute journey that drops you above Porthminster Beach.

You can also get direct trains to St Erth from Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, York, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow, making St Ives surprisingly accessible for holidaymakers travelling from across the UK.

Train frequency varies through the year:

  • Spring and summer: trains typically run every 30 minutes throughout the day, with extra capacity during peak season.
  • Autumn: services usually remain half‑hourly, though early mornings and late evenings may reduce to hourly.
  • Winter: timetables often shift to a mix of half‑hourly and hourly services, depending on demand.

There is a long‑stay Park & Ride at St Erth with more than 500 spaces across two car parks. Remember to buy your ticket before boarding the train either online or from the ticket office at St Erth.

How close are the beaches to town?

One of the biggest advantages of holiday apartments in St Ives is how close everything is. Harbour Beach and Bamaluz sit right in the centre of town, while Porthmeor, Porthminster and Porthgwidden are all just a few minutes’ walk from the harbourfront.

Sea Fever is a dog friendly holiday cottage in St Ives just fifty metres from Harbour Beach and within easy walking distance of Porthmeor and Porthminster. It’s particularly well suited to guests travelling with dogs who want easy access to the sand.

Carbis Bay Beach is also close to several of our holiday rentals. Porthia offers a nearby footpath leading downhill to Carbis Bay, where you’ll find beautiful scenery, water sports and great food. St Ives itself is around a twenty‑minute walk away, or you can hop on the train from Carbis Bay station for a quick ride into town.

Can I walk to restaurants and shops?

Yes, absolutely. All of our St Ives holiday cottages are within walking distance of great places to eat and browse. Most restaurants and shops are found on Fore Street and The Wharf, where you can do a relaxed loop around the harbourfront. You’ll also find plenty of cafés, galleries and independent shops around The Digey, Porthmeor and Porthminster.
